EIGHT

Saturday morning Victoria took Stealth to the new off-leash dog park so he could let loose and burn some energy. He deserved it after being shut up with her in her new office at the sheriff’s department for the last three days.

She watched the dog run in and out of a fountain of water, laughing at his antics. Stealth rushed away from the splashing water, shook out his fur, and barked a greeting to a nearby Border Collie. The two animals began romping together like they were long lost friends. And maybe they were. She was pretty sure the other dog was Lucky.

Victoria turned, looking all around expecting to see Natalie. Instead, she spotted Iron standing off to the side with Natalie’s husband, Chrome. She thought it might be best to pretend she hadn’t seen them, but before she could turn away both men waved at her. Busted. She raised a hand and waved back.

Iron headed her way. Victoria patted down her hair, rubbed her suddenly damp palms down the front of her jeans, and pasted a smile on her face. “I didn’t think running into each other every now and then included seeing you at the dog park, especially since you don’t own a dog.”

He gave her a crooked grin that made her heart beat faster and the rest of her body tingle. She couldn’t seem to control her stubborn body’s reaction to Iron whenever he was near. She wrapped her arms around her body and waited to see what he had to say this time.

He gave a careless shrug of his shoulders. “Chrome got roped into bringing Lucky to the park, and he volunteered me to come along.”

“You don’t strike me as someone who’s arm is easily twisted.” She knew better. Iron wouldn’t be there if he didn’t want to be.

“I’m not, I wanted to see you and took a chance that you’d be here.”

She arched a brow. “Really? That’s a mighty big chance.”

He shrugged. “Not really. Natalie told me you asked her about the dog park. I figured with your busy schedule late Saturday morning or early afternoon would be my best bet.” He gave her a smug grin. “Turns out it paid off.”

“Guess it did.” She eagerly changed the subject. “So, where’s Natalie?”

“There’s an open house at the riding center today, and she wanted to be there to help answer questions about the horses.”

Victoria nodded. She met all of Iron’s friends when she was staying with him. Steel, one of the Metal Cowboys, was engaged to Emily, who owned and operated a therapeutic riding center. The facility catered to special needs children and wounded vets. It was a worthy endeavor.

“Well, from everything I’ve seen during our short acquaintance, Natalie seems to love her animals.”

“That she does,” Iron agreed.

“You’re confusing me,” Victoria muttered under her breath. At the DEA, she was known for her bluntness.

“What’s that?” Iron raised a brow.

She sighed. “Continuing our friendship maybe even taking it up a notch crossed my mind more than once. It was part of the appeal of Luke’s job offer.
